Chinese Military Releases Jailbreak App, Apple Can Do Nothing

Thursday, August 4th, 2011 | iPhone with No Comments »

The People’s Liberation Army (China’s unified military organization) released an application for the iPhone. No big deal right? Well its a jailbreak only app.

The PLA in an effort to become more transparent about its operations (China, more transparent?) released an unauthorized jailbreak application along with complete instructions on how to install the app on the PLA’s official website. China has no plans to release the app through the App Store, and there’s no indication that the PLA even sent the app to Apple for inclusion in the App Store.

Report: Strained Apple-AT&T Partnership is Nothing New

The new August 2010 issue of Wired magazine has people talking about the publication’s article titled "#ATTFAIL Inside the iPhone Network Meltdown." The content provided portrays the long history of AT&T’s partnership with Apple as a regularly strained tech-marriage of convenience.

In the article, Apple CEO Steve Jobs is said to have come close to a breaking point on various occasions – heated moments where a break in the iPhone exclusivity agreement almost took place. According to the report, Jobs considered a switch to Verizon as early as 2007. The relationship, however, was strained in the eyes of both parties as Apple was stubborn about not limiting the Internet capabilities of the iPhone, while AT&T was consistently burdened by the new demands of Apple’s smartphone being exclusively available on its already over-burdened network.

In total, Apple is said to have come close to severing ties with AT&T on at least a half-dozen unique occasions. The report cites one unnamed source who claims that Cupertino once dispatched some of its engineers to Qualcomm’s offices with the explicit intention of exploring a CDMA iPhone. Ultimately, however, the company determined that rebuilding the iPhone would be required of that move – a choice that, at the time, would have proven far too expensive and time consuming to pursue. The story is told, however, as a reference point to today’s persistent headline of
Qualcomm reportedly working with Apple on a chip that, eventually, would allow the iPhone to call both AT&T and Verizon home.

Showing the lighter side of Cupertino’s corporate atmosphere, one anecdote recalls an AT&T representative suggesting to one of Steve Jobs’ underlings that a suit would be proper attire for a scheduled AT&T board meeting he was to attend. The rep was promptly told: “We’re Apple. We don’t wear suits. We don’t even own suits.”

The new issue of Wired is now available although the article in question isn’t yet viewable on Wired’s website.

A4 Teardown: “Nothing Revolutionary Here”

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010 | iPhone with No Comments »
Click the image to open in full size.

A dissection of the A4 chip Apple designed for the iPad reveals that it’s fairly conventional, incorporating a single core CPU – possibly the same one used in the iPhone 3GS – and some DRAM in a triple-layer "package-on-package" (PoP) design. Because the system-on-a-chip included the core and memory on a single piece of silicon, though, heroic measures were needed to look inside, including X-raying, soaking it in an acid bath and using a grinder to cut into the A4.

The guys at iFixit have done methodical teardowns of everything from cameras to guitars to mopeds. They did one on Apple’s newest device on Saturday, revealing elegant engineering and a fancy case design, but nothing extraordinary. One black box remained, though: Apple’s homegrown A4 system-on-a-chip. The iFixit guys had done a crude dissection of the iPhone’s CPU with a band-saw back in 2007, but for this job they needed more advanced techniques, so they went to Chipworks, which does reverse engineering and patent protection work for major Silicon Valley manufacturers.

First, the A4 was X-rayed from the bottom and sides, showing the fine wirebond interconnects between the three layers. Then, the chip was dipped in acid to remove the ceramic outer layer, and was slowly ground down to reveal each individual die. The two DRAM modules had Samsung markings on them, as expected, but the CPU itself was unmarked. This indicated to iFixit’s Kyle Wiens that "Apple is in firm control of the semiconductor design," rather than it being a result of Samsung engineering as is the iPhone 3GS CPU.

The analysis supported clues that ZodTTD already identified from his dump of the iPad’s I/O registry tree, indicating that the A4 is indeed a single-core processor. This strengthens the case that the CPU is a Cortex-A8, rather than a Cortex-A9 as had been theorized. The GPU can’t be conclusively identified from looking at the logic, but based on benchmarks it’s believed to be a PowerVR SGX 535.

The conclusion? "There’s not much revolutionary here," Kyle Wiens wrote, noting the A4 isn’t all that different from the Samsung processor Apple uses in the iPhone. Only the power characteristics seem to have changed significantly, with the SoC drawing about 2.5 watts on average to give the iPad its 10 hour battery life.
