In a recent hearing, Apple clarified that an estimate of a bond worth $2.7 billion per year will cover the losses suffered if Motorola prematurely enforces possible injunctions on iCloud that are later overturned. According to Florian Mueller of FOSS Patents, a lawyer on Motorola’s legal team mentioned that the case may last until 2018, potentially making the $2.7 billion yearly bond worth a total of $16.2 billion.

The case is part of an ongoing dispute with Motorola alleging that Apple’s iCloud infringes on certain existing synchronization technology patents. In the case, it’s View full post on ModMyi.com News Feed

Apple Notebook Uni-body Casing Supplier Shuts Down Plant, Could Affect Macbook Supply

Apple’s supply chain took a hit this weekend as a plant responsible for manufacturing the company’s uni-body laptop housings was shutdown.

Authorities forced Catcher Technology to shut down their factory in Eastern China due to “strange odors” coming from the plant. The plant produces 60% of Apple’s uni-body Macbook Pro and MacBook Air enclosures which could result in a 40% decrease in shipments of the notebooks during November.

Allen Horng, Catcher Technology president, acknowledged that total shipments would fall 20% in October and could affect November shipments View full post on ModMyi.com News Feed

UDID Could Be No More for iDevices in iOS 5

Monday, August 22nd, 2011 | iPhone with No Comments »

Apple could be doing away with the Unique Device Identifier for iOS devices.

Developers aren’t going to be happy.

For those who are unfamiliar with the UDID, it is a number unique to each iOS device, and up until now has been the standard way for developers to keep track of and identify users. Countless applications, games, and mobile networks use the UDID, and abandoning it may render developers historical user data useless forcing them to start over.

Developers will be forced to come up with their own UDIDs View full post on ModMyi.com News Feed

Apple’s Mothership Campus Could Swallow the Empire State Building

Wednesday, August 17th, 2011 | iPhone with No Comments »

Apple’s new mothership-futuristic-space-circle lair is absolutely gigantic, so gigantic in fact, even the Empire State Building and Pentagon are emasculated.

A nifty graphic put together by Mac Observer compares, to scale, the size of the iShip Campus to a number of other large buildings, vessels, and blimps. The buildings 1,615 foot diameter bests the Pentagon’s diameter of 1,566 feet, and is nearly 400 feet longer than the height of the Empire State Building (1,250 feet).

The new office building, if you can call it that, includes an auditorium View full post on ModMyi.com News Feed

100 Million iPhones Could Ship By Years End

Wednesday, August 17th, 2011 | iPhone with No Comments »

Stop and think about that headline for a moment. Apple’s grand total number of iPhones shipped during 2011 could reach 100 million units.

What else sells that much anything in a year? Bananas? Individual Skittles?

Shipping that many units doesn’t guarantee sales of that many units, but even so, what other industry that deals in electronics does those kind of numbers? Record labels in their heyday were happy shipping 5-10 million units world wide. Now labels are lucky if an Artist’s album goes gold (500,000 copies).

It now looks like those recent senate hearings on mobile security and consumer privacy may have actually served a bigger purpose than your run-of-the-mill political barking that comes without any real biting. On Friday, two members of a prominent US Senate subcommittee put forth their recommendations to Congress for new laws that could impact the likes of Apple, Google, and RIM.

Senators John Kerry (D-Mass.) and Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) are encouraging a bill that would regulate consumer privacy across smartphones and the web. The lawmakers contend that the regulation is essential to impede "the practice of gathering and sharing personal user data."

Quote:

Apple Inc., Google Inc. and Facebook Inc., along with the thousands of developers who make applications for their platforms, are facing increasing scrutiny from Congress over how they collect, use and store customer information, including data gathered from smartphones and other wireless devices.

“These devices are not really phones–they are miniature computers,” said Rockefeller, chair of the Commerce Committee. “The mobile marketplace is so new, and technology is moving so quickly that many consumers do not understand the privacy implications of their actions.” Bloomberg News reports that Rockefeller is still search for concrete evidence that Apple and Google are truly in compliance with online privacy laws – particularly those that pertain to children.

Yesterday, Catherine Novelli, vice president of worldwide government affairs for Apple, told her questioners in Capitol Hill that Apple “doesn’t knowingly collect any information on children under age 13.”

Cloud Files Found in OS X Lion, Could Be The Evolution of iDisk

Click the image to open in full size.

9to5 Mac has just stated that they’ve found some interesting new icons in Mac OS X Lion that may reveal a part of Apple’s new plan for MobileMe, which is currently MIA.

There seems to be a folder and sidebar icon which looks specifically designed for cloud documents. This would obviously be a place for a user to store whatever documents they choose and store them on the cloud, similar to what MobileMe’s iDisk currently does. This however, seems to be a bit more like popular service Dropbox, as there is the file icon, along with the sidebar shortcut in finder. The files are labeled "MobileDocumentsFolder.icns, Mobile Documents 32.png and SidebarMobileDocumentsFolder.icns."

This seems like an elegant evolution from the current iDisk logos. It’s possible that this is simply could be a re-naming of the iDisk feature, but we suspect there’s something more to this. We may have to wait until closer to this summer to find out, but I would be surprised if we got some more information on this as soon as the March 2nd event, where Apple will introduce the next generation iPad.
